iPhone Suddenly Transfer Photos as HEIC

Hello,

Up to two days ago, whenever I took a photo or a video using Messages and opened Messages on my MBP, and dragged the photo to my desktop, it would transfer as a JPEG. Now it transfers as a HEIC file. I have the Transfer to Mac or PC setting on my iPhone as 'Automatic' and I have the Camera Format Setting as 'Most Compatible'. As I said, up to a day ago this same sequence would give me a JPEG on my Mac. Any help is appreciated; I know I can covert them on my MBP but would rather it worked like before.

Info: iPhone 15 Pro Max, iOS 17.6 (BTW it was doing this BEFORE the update).

Thanks in Advance!

Several users have reported a similar problem. The rules for "Automatic" seem to have changed after recent iOS update. If your Mac is running a system version that supports HEIC, "Automatic" will now transfer HEIC images as in the original format and not convert them to JPEGs.

This makes sense, because the format conversion from HEIC to JPEG is lossy and should be avoided, if it is not necessary.

If you want to use JPEGS on your Mac, ensure, that the photos are taken as JPEGs right away and no conversion is necessary,

Thanks for the reply. I have the Camera format set to Most Compatible, which to my understanding is JPEG, but it still is using HEIC. Is there another setting I am missing?

In way of background, I do a LOT of reviews for large multinational companies, and photos are necessary. I do all photography of this thru Messages since this puts them in one place and I don't have to hunt for them in Photos. If I could take everything in HEIC and transfer them as jpeg for this purpose that would be great. Sadly, it is no longer working like this.
