Apple can only connect with other apples
Just got off phone with Apple support and was told Apple will only connect with other apples only if you try to send pictures or texts or emails.
iPad Pro, iPadOS 16

It sounds as if you might have misunderstood something. I regularly communicate with people who dont' have Apple devices from my MacBook Air and my iPad
You can send emails to absolutely anyone with an email account from your Apple device.
If you have a iPad, you can send text and pictures to anyone else using iMessage (Apple's Messaging system). If you have an iPhone, you can link it to the Mac and send text and picture messages to anyone.
Forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to other devices - Apple Support
This isn't really a Mac limitation. iPads and computers aren't cell phones and, on their own, they can't send SMS/MMS messages. They either need to be linked to a phone or you need to use a third-party messaging application. A popular option is Facebook Messenger. I'm sure there are lots of others.

After talking with Apple support after buying new 13 inch air to communicate with family I was told that if family does not have Apple products I can not send or receive email or texts or pictures with them since Apple only connects with other Apple products
