I need to buy a new WiFi router for my home that I can use to back up my Mac wirelessly.
I was using a Time Capsule whose drive was dead, but to which I connected an external drive by USB. Time Machine was very happy with this setup.
Which WiFi routers will support wireless Time Machine backups to a USB-attached drive, and how can I tell?
There aren't many Time Capsule alternatives out there, but two router manufacturers, that support Time Machine (TM) backups to USB-attached external drives, are Asus & Synology. There are a couple of other players as well.

I replaced my whole system with a Netgear Nighthawk Tri-band Mesh 6E system.
It was painless. I gave it the same WiFi network name and password and things just worked. Time Machine never noticed the difference!
I would just get a Synology NAS and not try to mix Routing, WiFi and Backup in the same box.
I lean towards at least a 4-bay Synology NAS system, but if budget is important, the any model.
I would also only use NAS or Enterprise rated drives in the Synology.
But that is just me.
