Persistent Heating Issue with iPad Air M2 13-inch While Using GoodNotes or Notes App

Dear Apple Support Team,

I am writing to bring to your attention a persistent issue I have been experiencing with my iPad Air M2 13-inch, specifically related to overheating. Despite updating to the latest iPadOS 17.6, the problem remains unresolved.

Issue Description:

1. Device: iPad Air M2 13-inch

2. Software: Latest iPadOS 17.6

3. Problem: Significant heating around front camera while using GoodNotes or the built-in Notes app

4. Accessories: Apple Pencil Pro

Usage Details:

• Primary Use: Note-taking using GoodNotes and the Notes app.

• Secondary Use: Browsing the internet for reading and research purposes.

• No Graphic-Intensive Apps: I do not use any graphic-intensive applications or games.

Despite the M2 chip’s reputed high performance, my device heats up considerably during these relatively simple tasks. This overheating issue is ironic and disappointing, given the high expectations from Apple’s advanced hardware. The heating is not only uncomfortable but also raises concerns about potential long-term damage to the device.

As a student, I rely heavily on my iPad for note-taking and studying. The overheating issue disrupts my studies and diminishes the user experience significantly.

Request:

I kindly request Apple to look into this issue urgently and provide a solution. It is crucial for me to have a reliable device for my academic needs. The current situation is not sustainable and hampers my productivity.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to a prompt resolution.

The Apple Support Community is a user-to-user technical forum. Contributors here are all end-users, just like you. Other than the site Moderators, Apple neither monitor nor participate here. As such, if you hope to directly reach Apple or Apple Support through these forums, you will be disappointed.

Should you need to do so, you can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

Returning to your issue - it is not unusual for an iPad to become warm when being used - more so when using some types of iPad case. High screen brightness and/or CPU intensive Apps will also create more heat.

The key point is that whilst your iPad may become very warm in normal use, the iPad should not become uncomfortably hot to handle. If your iPad is becoming too hot to hold, you should take your iPad along to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider - where the technicians can examine and test your iPad for faults:

I have a brand new iPad Pro M2 and also gets a little bit hot when I’m using Safari or the notes app, plus, it sounds a bit lower than my previous iPad Pro 2020.
Is it faulty?

Assuming that your iPad was purchased directly from Apple, in most countries Apple offers the facility to unconditionally return an undamaged/unwanted item within 14-days of its original purchase from Apple. If applicable - and you are disappointed with your new iPad - you should consider making use of this opportunity while it remains available to you.
