Really old appleID hacked and cannot recover

I have a really old appleID back when there was iTunes and only iPods. So my username/appleID for that account is just a word, not an email address. I had bought all my music (when there was iTunes) and purchased/downloaded a number of apps with that appleID. The old appleID was recently hacked which is preventing me from updating apps purchased with that appleID. I cannot figure out how to reset the password because the Apple password reset page will only take email address or telephone numbers. Apple support told me to try to reset through iTunes on my Mac, but iTunes for a current Mac is not available as far as i can tell. I really don't want to delete and repurchase every app. Any suggestions?

Refer to this page for Apple Support features ➔ Contact - Official Apple Support

Select from the presented options until you find a solution for your issue, or see if there is a chat or phone call contact method offered lower on the page (you sometimes have to narrow down the options multiple times before this is shown). If you do not see your issue, keep experimenting with any series of selections until you reach one that offers a chat session or a telephone call and get the representative to redirect you.
