Replacing Logic Board in MacBook Pro

Hi,

I am based abroad in Asia and my 2021 16" MacBook Pro laptop (model A2141) died yesterday. I brought it to a local technician here as there are no Apple stores or Genius Bars where I am, and he said my logic board was fried and I need to replace it. He quoted me $900 USD for a new board. I was hoping someone knows the price range of a logic board for my laptop model to be sure I am paying a fair price here in Asia to have the logic board replaced. Thank you!

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.5

You cannot swap parts on the M-series Macs since they are paired. Some functions & features will not work when used with a different Logic Board. These M-series Macs are nothing like the older non-USB-C Intel Macs where parts could be easily swapped between systems. If you cannot get an official Apple repair from Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, then you should not get the laptop repaired. The only exception would be if the repair tech actually repaired your Logic Board, but there are not very many people who have the necessary knowledge or skills to do it properly.

Edit: Plus many of these newer Macs are tied to people's AppleID and also MDM systems so that the previous owner may still be in control of the Logic Board. It is not worth the risk.

If truly a new Apple-direct board, that quote seems in the ballpark. I recall Macbook Pro boards ten years ago reported here as US$700 for 15-inch model Macbook Pros.

The problem is that, in places without an Apple presence, we see a lot of reports of shoddy repairs and used parts sold and new. Caveat emptor!

⚠️ However, HWTech has more hands-on experience with Mac hardware than anyone I've worked beside here for many years, and I highly recommend heeding his wise council.

Hello,

I would strongly suggest that you get your MacBook repaired by an Apple certified technician. Even if there are no Apple Stores around you, there may still be Apple Authorized Service Providers. Mail-in repairs are also a great option if you do not have a repair center easily accessible.

With Apple certified repairs your device is repaired using only genuine Apple Parts by Apple trained service technicians.

I hope this helps!

Hello Drake! Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it's not an option to send it in as I am quite remote for the next weeks and would fear I would never get it returned to me where I am. The technician here is an Mac specialist but yeah probably not "certified". According to expats here he is the best around whatever that means LOL. Would you happen to know the price range for a logic board for a 16" MacBook Pro laptop? If it is around $900USD then I can at least feel like he is charging me "market price". Thanks so much for your time!
