Bulk convert live photos to still photos

I've seen some workarounds to make this conversion, but I think I found a simpler one.

Firstly, turning off 'live' on individual photos doesn't free up memory as you can just turn it back on, so all the live frames must be preserved somewhere.

At the bottom of the albums list on the photos app you can select the smart album 'live photos'. Use the select feature to select all, then the three dots menu to duplicate all the photos at once. You'll be given the option to save the duplicates as still photos. These duplicates will be saved alongside the original live photos, as they preserve the original photo date. I would strongly recommend checking a random selection of the live photos in your main library afterwards to make sure they've all been copied as still photos.

Once you're sure the photos have been successfully duplicated, you can bulk delete the live photos from the live photo smart album. Remember that deleted photos are saved in 'recently deleted' in case of errors.

If you export a live photo to a folder on the Desktop you'll get a jpeg and mov file. Combined in the library they constitute the live photo. So if you export all of the live photos to a folder on the Desktop, sort them by Kind,

delete all of the .mov file and import the remaining jpeg files into your library you will essentially converted them into just normal jpeg files.

Once you're confirmed the successful re-import into the library you can delete all of the original live photos.
