Helping a friend. Brand new air tag. Connected no problem, tried to add onto Find My, not happening. Tried: updating iOS
turning WiFi & Bluetooth off and on
forgot Bluetooth devices
resetting air tag twice
you name it we’ve done it. Any suggestions?

Ok, thank you. So it appears that you properly paired this AirTag to your friend's Apple ID. As such, when it is within Bluetooth range (30-40'), it should show up on the Items tab of the Find My app on their iPhone.
If it is still not there, then something went wrong with the pairing process.

Which exact model is their iPhone and what version of iOS is it running? Is it an iPhone 12, running iOS 17, as per the tagline?
Just so we are both on the "same page." When you "add" an Apple AirTag, you essentially are registering/pairing it to an Apple ID. Once paired, the tag should show up in the Find My app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The tag is associated to the ID, not the phone.
So, again the steps to add an AirTag was provided in the support article I gave you earlier.
You are saying that it "paired fine." That would tell me that you went through those steps and were able to tap on "Finish."
You should also have seen, that alternately, you can add a tag by going to the Find My app first. You should have to do both methods.
What I'm trying to understand is where the process failed for you.
Ok, we did stage 1-5 on the instructions. Then we opened the find my app and the tag wasn’t there, which I assume it has to be to actually locate the luggage? So we pressed + device, chose air tag and it tried looking for it (it was beside the phone) but never got passed searching for it.
Done all the steps on the link. It’s an iPhone 14+ with update 17.6.1
It paired fine. When we go onto “find my” and add a device, choose air tag, nothing! It tries for ages and never adds it.
Ok, thanks. Exactly at what step were pairing it to their Apple ID was not successful? Did you verify that your friend's iPhone has an active Internet connection when attempting the pairing?
