New MacBook Air M3 is unbelievably slow

Hi there,

So I just bought a new MacBook Air M3 a couple days but it has been extremely slow at doing every single task - even typing out the words for this post comes with a significant lag. Safari, Spotify and Notes have, so far, been the worst culprits, at certain times they have been nearly unusable. However, I'm not too sure what to do in this situation as I'm not particularly tech-savvy.

I heard that creating an EtreCheck report would be best so that others can more clearly appraise the situation so here is the report:

Like I said, I have no idea really what I'm doing here so I'm not sure what much of this means or how to resolve the issues EtreCheck has diagnosed.

Any help and guidance based on the information in this report would be massively appreciated!

Also, I did use the Migration Assistant App to transfer files from my old HP Spectre to this Mac. I don't know if that is relevant to my issues but I have seen that using the Migration app can cause certain problems so I thought I should say.

Thanks again for any help that you can give!

Yours is the second report of poor performance with no obvious explanation other than one common factor being "Notion".

Notion Helper (Renderer) (6) 666.20 % (Not signed - Translocated)

I don't know what it is, but it's behaving badly. It is leaving little time for that Mac to do anything else. Look for an update, contact its developer, uninstall it... you decide.

Also,

Limited permissions - More information may be available with Full Disk Access.

Fix that and run EtreCheck again.

You do have a few choices to make before we review your EtreCheck report:

  • You have 14 days, from the purchase date, to return this laptop for either a full refund or a replacement. You should consider this as initial poor performance is not a common feature for Macs.
  • Was this issue present BEFORE you migrated any data? That is, when you ran the Setup Assistant did you let it run and did not elect to use Migration Assistant to transfer any data? Just trying to understand if the migration is the culprit here.
