Move screenshots in Photos app to an album

I take screenshots on my iPad and iPhone to save for later reference.

I want to view the screenshots on my Mac photos app and move them to various photo albums. Then I want to clear the screenshots folder.

The problem is that when I delete the screenshots from the "screenshots" section, they are automatically deleted from the albums that I've saved them to.

How else could I achieve what I want to do?

That is intentional. There is no way to move photos from the library albums created automatically by Photos to an album of our own. All albums created automatically by Photos are a kind of smart albums and populated automatically according to some smart rules, specific for the album and are based on all photos in the library. When you delete a photo from a library album it will vanish completely from your library. We can only remove photos from albums we create ourselves. The standard albums we create are referencing the photos stored in the library and are not keeping copies of the photos we add to the albums.

You could create your own screenshots album "My Screenshots" as a smart album and set it up to show only the photos not yet in any album.

  • File > New Smart album
  • Set the smart rules of this album to
    • Photo > is >Screenshot"
    • Album > is not > Any
  • Combine the two rules with "Match all"

This new smart album My Screenshots will only show you the photos you have not yet added to any album.
