Slide show of files not in Photos app

I have a file folder on my iPad with photos not in my iPad photos app. How can I display them as a slide show without importing them into the photos app? I used to be able to just open the first photo and then swipe from one to the next, but that no longer works since Apple changed how Files works.

iPad Pro, iPadOS 26

Excellent work! iPadOS and iOS now have Preview, and Files is set to open pictures in that app. You can change the default using that same long-press that you did, but instead you can choose Open With:

and pick Quick Look, so you won't have to do that again!

When in Files on an iPad running iPadOS Version 26.2.1 there is no space bar or arrow keys. The method you describe is similar to how I've done this on my iMac but on an iPad opening a file folder in Files you don't have access to a space bar or arrow keys to move from one file to the next.

That said, you did help me by mentioning Quick Look. I found that opening the first of the files in the folder by touching and holding it, the menu containing Quick Look comes up. Quick Look then allows me to swipe from file to file (photo to photo) the way I used to do it before Apple changed Files.
