Apple calendar. Is there a way to enlarge the colour dots for different calendars? Or a way to box the event in colour so it stands out. The colour dots are very small and sometimes hard to differentiate

No, you can't change the size of the dots.
You can let Apple know it's something you'd like to see here:
You may also want to take a look at some of the many, many other calendar apps in the App Store. Fantastical has a nice interface but it's just one of many.
