where are port settings for ipad mail accounts?

Having trouble setting up a POP account on my old iPad (3rd generation - A1430). Set-up is saying that SSL is not working. I think this may be because the port numbers are incorrect - but I can't find any way to check. Can anyone help?

iPad, iOS 9

Almost! Yes, it's iOS 9. But the 'advanced' option only shows up when you select an existing account. As I couldn't set up a new account, no options were available. The trick seems to be to set up an account even when Settings are showing an error and save it; then the 'advanced' option appears and the port settings can be configured correctly. Did this and now it works!

Big thanks to all who tried to help.

Your iPad3 will likely have iOS 9.x installed. The path to the port settings for SMTP (send server) and POP3/POP3S (receive server) are:

Settings > Passwords & Accounts > [Your Mail Account] >

  • [Outgoing Mail Server] SMTP > [Primary Server] > Server Port - set as required
  • Advanced > [Incoming Settings] Server Port - set as required

When setting your port settings, ensure that you also select the correct Authentication and SSL settings to access your Mail account. Note that you must set the account Password for both the send and receive server.

The first, easiest troubleshooting step for mail accounts is to delete the account and add it back. That should update the settings.

Have you tried Settings>Mail>Accounts>Account Settings? I don't have any POP accounts so all I can look at is my IMAP accounts.

I remember once upon a time, people saying that if they deliberately tried to set up a POP account as an IMAP account, it would fail and they would be able to edit the settings.

You might also want to contact your email provider and see if they can move the account to IMAP. Sometimes that's possible.
