Forgot MacBook password, Apple ID won’t connect to server

I forgot my MacBook Air password. It says I can reset it by using my Apple ID. However, whenever I go to type in my Apple ID, it says “there was an error connecting to the Apple ID server.” I’ve tried reconnecting to different internet networks and nothing is working. What do I do?
