Is MacKeeper Legitimate?

I've used MacKeeper for a couple of years now and have noticed that issues crop of with MacBook Pro (usually slowing down) around the time I am due for a quarterly check up. When the check up is done, the problem is resolved but they always want to sell me yet another software package to prevent future problems.

Has anyone else had the same experience?

I am beginning to think that MacKeeper is creating problems to set up another sale.

MacBook Pro 16″, 14.5

You will find that the not-so-scrupulous makers of MacKeeper make it very hard to completely remove from your system. It likes to leave bits of itself about to continue to interfere with normal operations.

The free version of MalwareBytes, the work product of a respected former contributor here, should pick up MacKeeper as a "PUP," or "potentially unwanted program" and allow you to remove it.

To avoid other disasters, please get MalwWareBytes ONLY from its developer's website:

Correct.

As execrable as that product happens to be, its uninstallation instructions are completely effective, and a model of how things should work.

Follow those instructions. There is no need and no justification for installing yet another product to uninstall something that should not have been installed to begin with.

As for the effects of actually having used "MacKeeper", that's an entirely different subject. It is often necessary to completely erase the affected Mac and reconfigure it from the ground up. Rule 1 of Macs is don't install junk.
