Mac Messages Splitting Named Group Chat Into Unnamed But Same Group

A group chat in Mac Messages on my Macbook Pro is suddenly splitting incoming messages between the named group, and a newly created group with the same members, but without the group name.

This is only on the laptop - on my iPhone, everything files correctly under the named group. On the laptop, it's seemingly random in how it routes new chats to this unnamed group it auto-created.

It may be a bug with Sonoma 14.6.1 as I can't remember this occurring before the update.

Anyone else experiencing similar, or know how to solve?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Just another bit of info if it helps. Some of the chats have my own name included at the top & the bubble, the others don't. I think it's only happening with chats that have iOS & Android clients.

My phone re(?)-updated to iOS 17.6.1 overnight (Fri 8/30 into Sat 8/31), and when I responded to a mixed Android/iPhone group text thread through my Mac today, a new thread did not form on my phone. When I responded through my phone, everything seemed back to normal on the Mac, too. So, maybe something wasn't working between the iOS and Mac OS and has been debugged? 🤞🏼

I've also spent 4 hours with their tech support (so far) before the issue was escalated to the engineers. They're supposed to get back to me later this week.

Like you, I'm skeptical that this is a Verizon issue. As has been stated upthread, this only happened with the Sonoma 14.6.1 update. It would be an amazing coincidence if Verizon updated their SMS/MMS/RCS handling at the exact same time.

One more bit of info I don't think I've seen here yet. I've noticed that on my Macs when I get a notification for one of these group messages, I often see (null) rather than the person who sent the message. For instance:

(null) loved an attachment

Hoping this gets a fix soon. It's really difficult to keep track of one conversation split into two.

Agree that this only happens with messages to multiple people where at least one has an Android. Spent an hour in the Apple store today with their "genius". He said it's an iCloud issue. Said support had to handle it. Contacted support (another hour), and they said their "Senior Department" has to handle it. The Senior Department told me it's a Verizon issue. I am skeptical, since it happens on an iphone (Verizon), ipad (AT&T), and two Macs.

Typical support answer. Blame the other guy, wash hands of problem. This coincided 100% with upgrading to 14.6.1. Some of the behavior I've posted in this thread is in Apple's court to fix (i.e. my name being in one of the split chats and not the other as well as the (null) identifier I see in notifications as to who sent the most recent message. They have something to fix. Group chats are part of our lives and this needs to be resolved.
