No iPhone microphone with star key hearing aids

I just bought my parents IPhone 14s and now anytime they get or make a phone call it turns off or down the microphone on their phone and no one can hear them. This used to work on their old iPhone 8s. This is ridiculously annoying. iPhones are supposed to be the best out there. But can’t seem to provide a solution for this. Can someone help?
