My Apple Watch Ultra keeps pausing during my swim

So my Ultra watch keeps pausing during my swim with only hitting the quick access button to the workout app. No 2 button holding required. How do I stop this as it is ruining my workouts. I tried turning off the pause feature and no difference was made

My next attempt to find a work around is I have chosen to rotate the orientation so the crown button is forward and the action button is pointing away from my hand. I have been wearing an apple watch since Series 5 in the other orientations so I will sadly need to create new muscle memory for watch use if this bandaid works until the issue is resolved with an update

Maybe I didn't make myself clear, a single press of the action button while swimming pauses your work out, AND pressing the 2 buttons illustrated pauses your workout, you don't have an option as to which way you would prefer to have this feature. The 2 button is a redundancy as there is no option to change the single action press to anything else or to simply disable it as a in workout function button.

I have flipped my orientation and will see how it works in the pool tomorrow, just annoying that this is what I am forced to try after wearing an apple watch for years with no issue, seems like another feature that was created that I didn't ask for without the functionality to opt out of the offering.

Well I did some more digging as to what comes along as unwanted consequences of using the action button as the access to Workout. Clicking once opens the workout app then once you launch a workout it says you use the button to "control" the workout. This must be an updated feature as I have the 1st Gen of the Ultra watch and have swam over a hundred Km never encountering this issue. I was out of the pool for a while but this is clearly a new problem and there appears to be no way to change this option in the settings, it only shows as informational. Seems rather counter productive as the water setting that activates when you start a swim workout happily locks out most other features until cleared and working with the watch with wet hands is a nightmare anyway.

Does anyone have a fix for this beyond switching the Action button to None and making it a useless button.

I just reached out to Apple to solve your issue out, by clicking the action button and the side button together will pause your watch in a workout. The only fix I have thought of is to disable the Action Button in the settings for the Apple Watch or wear your Watch on your other arm when swimming.

Here’s a helpful video on how to customize the Action button on Apple Watch Ultra ⇢

So if I swap to launching a specific workout, ie pool swim. then this is the option it presents me. The ridiculous thing is that it clearly shows how to pause your workout with the 2 button option, which would be great, however the secondary action that is loaded with swimming by pushing the action button also pauses your workout. It would seem that there is version update required to fix this over site. I like the option of a 2 button pause solution, even though I haven't used it in the pool, I would prefer to keep the action button as quick access to my workout app, as I also so outdoor swims, cycling and elliptical workouts. If I leave the access to the workout app then there is no editing option for the 2nd click while in workout, as it suggests it offers different options based on the workout chosen. It is bizarre to me that if I click on swimming that there are 2 shortcut ways to pause my workout and one of them is single press with a raised button.

Is this something Apple intends to fix?

if you must know, I damaged my other wrist in a workplace accident, it was my preferred wrist before that, so that is not an option. It happened before the apple watch ever existed so that isn't the source of the problem. I have swam with an apple watch for years prior to the Ultra and a couple of years with. This is an issue that just started happening, i believe after the last update which likely coincides with the latest watch release. Do you not find it a touch annoying that the solution would be for me to now wear my watch differently after over 2 years? It isn't like it was an out of the box problem when I upgraded to the Ultra and the action button was one of the things I liked as a feature, now it has evolved into something that ruins my workout. I find it incredibly frustrating that the solution I am forced into for a $1500 watch is maybe start wearing it differently. They already changed how to access the function page on a previous update so I woke up having to relearn how to use my watch, less than ideal when getting ready for work at 5am, and now here I am again.
