A friend of mine, with whom we track our locations, is traveling and will be away for a long time. I can see where he is whenever I look. What I need is for him to send me notifications of his whereabouts every hour using shortcuts or another alternative. Is this possible?

barbbros ~ Yes, it's possible. Look up the Automations section in Apple's guide below and post back with qstns. Shortcuts offers several 'actions' related to Location, Maps and Communication which can be used in a single custom shortcut 'Run' from each of 24 'Time of Day' automations.

Please read my previous reply again. Put another way: your friend has to set up the automations & shortcut on HIS iPhone so that the shortcut gets HIS location each hour and sends it to you.

Look at the Send SOS app in the iOS/iPadOS App Store. Also in the Google Play store. Sends a text message with current GPS coordinates. Free. iOS 10.2 or later. This goes on your friend's phone.

The "single custom shortcut 'Run' from each of 24 'Time of Day' automations" would have to be set up on the other person's iPhone and take their position. You would then receive the resulting email or message, etc. which their shortcut generates and sends. (Sorry, I didn't make that clear in my initial reply.)

First of all, thank you. Although I basically understand the logic, I must say that I cannot fully understand it. I couldn't find taking someone else's position within the functions. I'm researching though :)
