Mail app on Mac not showing banners / alerts

The Mail app on Mac is not showing alerts/banners for new emails. I have notifications turned on, and do not disturb is off. How can I fix this issue on Sonoma?

If you can’t send or receive email on Mac - Apple Support

If you aren't receiving notifications for new mail, it could be possible you aren't receiving mail at all. If that is the case, the above link provides instructions on how to fix that. Otherwise, check you are connected to internet. If you are, open the mail app on your Mac and click mail in the top left corner. Then click settings, Under the "General" tab, ensure that "Check for new messages" is set to anything other than "Manual". Even though you mentioned notifications were turned on, it is still a good idea to check if your notifications for mail are turned on in settings.
