Strange results with text groups with mixed Apple and Android members

I'm in a text group with seven people, four of whom are using an Apple device and three on Android. I know a mixed group like this puts certain limitations on leaving the group and other things. But one thing I'm puzzled about and didn't expect to see is that on all four of my Apple devices--my two iPads, iPhone, and iMac--somehow our single text thread has split itself into two separate threads. I can't quite see how the two threads relate to each other, but some messages from the group end up in one thread and others on the other thread. And the division of messages between the two text groups is different among my four devices! On my iPad, a lot of my own messages end up in one group, but that's not the case on my iMac.

In short, I can't figure out how or why Messages splits this group text thread into two, and I certainly can't figure out how it determines which text to put into which thread.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

(I'm putting this message into the MacOS section, but it's equally applicable to iPadOS and iOS.)

I talked with Apple support today. They're aware of the problem but don't have a fix for it. Apple and Google programmers are hard at work trying to synchronize their messaging protocols, and until that happens the problem could keep happening. I mentioned that it's mostly been ok until the last week or two but she couldn't tell me what could have happened recently to have caused this problem. She says that "some people" have found that starting a new Messages thread with the same people sometimes helps everything synchronize properly, but of course all the old text messages are then lost to the new thread.

I heard back from another Apple person in my group text thread, and she is NOT having this problem. So I guess that adds another layer of mystery to the situation.

I realize that another mixed (Apple and Android) text group I have has now split into two. As we have been noticing, one of the groups lists me in the person list, and the other one has the more normal behavior of not listing me.

And just like the first text group that I saw has been split, the way it gets split is inconsistent across my Apple devices.

I have AppleCare, and I think I'll call Apple about this. It's clearly a bug in the way Apple iMessage protocol relates to Android text protocol.

Unfortunately Apple calls the messages "forwarded", so while they show up properly on your phone, they are "forwarded" to you on your other Apple products, hence the dual thread. If we want to keep the whole conversation intact, we can only respond/reply using our phones. This started for me when I installed the newest OS on my iMac and I sure hope Apple fixes fit soon.

Hi Rick, not sure if your question is for me, but yes, no amount of deleting of threads has eliminated the "splitting." I text my two best friends overnight on my phone and it's fine on the phone. When I just opened up my laptop now, there is a split. The orginal thread with my responses only and their responses (an iphone and an android) in a separate thread. When I text back on original thread on laptop, it's again fine on my phone. If one or both of them respond, their responses on the laptop only are in the split thread (with me as an "additional" user.) Blocking myself has not worked.

Nope. They split on phone, on iPad, on iMac. I'm using messages in iCloud so they should all be identical. Interestingly, the splits are different on different devices. IOW, various messages, from me, or from other show up in different threads, or conversations as Apple call them. On some devices I can see that I am listed in the group, on one of the conversation. That is not normal and I think it's a significant clue.

I see I can no longer edit my original message, but this may be a clue: in the original group text thread, at the top of the pane in the TO: field where it shows the names of the people in the thread--or more accurately, the list of recipients to my messages-- it indicates six people and does NOT include me. In the second thread that somehow got split off, it indicates all seven people in the group, including me.

I'm having this issue too, but it is not consistent across devices. I'm using messages in iCloud on all devices, so they should be same. But at moment I have group text split into two threads/conversations on iPad, but they are together on iPhone. Thanks for the tip about the people list. It looks like the normal situation is that I am not listed in that list. But on the group that is shown twice I am listed in one of them. Weird.

Yep, that’s exactly what I’m seeing. And all my devices also have Messages in iCloud, so you’re right that it should be consistent among all devices, but it’s definitely not. I think the clue to figuring this out is how on one group we’re listed in the people list and the other we’re not.

I’m pretty sure that at one point one of my four devices had the text thread intact in a single group as it should be, as you have with your iPhone, but then at some point it split in two like the other devices.

I’ve checked with the other people on the group thread, and so far I’ve only heard back from the Android users and they aren’t seeing it. I’ll talk again with the other iPhone users. It is bizarre.

PMFJI but if you try to start a 'new' thread with same people, it shows the 'old' thread before you can even start typing the message. This is normal behavior.

This new issue (groups splitting into two threads) started about a week ago. I can respond to either of them and the rest of the group sees my replies.

I recall years ago, one person in the group had an old flip phone, and when they replied, it would send individual texts to each person in the group. That was equally weird but not related to the current issue.

Currently I'm seeing two different groups of people splitting into two threads. Both groups have a mix of android and IOS users. IMO messaging should give us users more control to edit group list, especially we should be able to leave a group. We are reduced to groveling to the entire group to please please pleas start a new thread without us, cuz as long as they keep responding to that one, we'll keep getting them. Blocking isn't an option cuz these are friends and families. Apple could give us a filter function as a checkbox on a group text. They would arrive silently and be pushed off to a separate folder.
