Watch faces unavailable on new SE watch for kid

I bought a new Apple Watch for my kid so they can call if they need anything while away from home. They do not have an iPhone so it’s set up through Family. She wants to change her watch face because it moves and is hard to read, but there is only one face available. I’ve pressed down on the face and swiped both directions. There is no plus sign to get any other faces, just change the color of the unreadable one that she doesn’t want. I can’t change it from my phone, even when paired. I do not want to pay a monthly subscription to a third party app for this feature. I want one of the standard Apple Watch complications. How do I achieve this without resetting the watch back to factory settings?
