How do I tell if an iPhone is unlocked if it doesn't have a sim card? The message on settings/about/carrier is "not available"? And. if that means it is or may be locked, how do I unlock it? iphone 6 Model A1549 but also interested in other older phones too.

The "Carrier Lock" entry in settings was only added with newer iOS versions the iPhone 6 can't update to.
You'll need to try out a sim card and see if it issues an error.
If you bought it directly from a carrier and a low cost, its probably locked to them.
Otherwise, its should be unlocked.
What iPhone model is this?
What iOS version is it running?
Do you see a "Carrier Lock" section in Settings ➜ General ➜ About?
If you don't see one, then there's no way to tell if its locked or not outside of inserting 2 sim cards from 2 different carriers and testing it out.
If both works it can safely be concluded that it is unlocked. If one or both issue an error such as "Sim card not supported" then its locked.
Thank you for your response. It's an iphone 6 - Model A1549. Unlike my 13, it doesn't say "Carrier Lock" with response "No SIM restrictions". Instead it says "Carrier" with response "Not Available".
