itunes cannot recognize iphone

IMac running OS 10.12.6

iPhone SE running iOS 17.5.1

When opening either iTunes or Photos,

error message says "need software update to connect"

Then when I hit the "install" button, next error message says

"download failed"

iMac 27″, macOS 10.12

I think you may have found the point where your iPhone is running an iOS version that will no longer talk to iTunes. Several years ago Apple replaced iTunes with the Music application.


If you cannot upgrade your macOS version to a version newer and with an iTunes/Music version that will talk to iOS 17 then you won't be able to sync your iPhone anymore. If you use iCloud you can still get access to some files that way if you log into iCloud.com with a web browser.
