In Apple Mail on Mac how to search for messages I just sent to a single individual?

A small group of six friends emails to each other and we often put all of us on the TO: line. However, I want to find the emails I wrote to only one individual, and this person happens to be in that group. If I click on the search box and enter his name and click the TO: dropdown, it displays all emails I wrote to him personally as well as those in which he is one of the many individuals in the TO: field,

How can I find only the emails I sent him personally?

Search for emails using your own words

When you click in the search field, Smart search suggestions provide recommended searches and show related content.

  1. In the Mail app  on your Mac, in the toolbar, enter a phrase in the search field (if it’s not shown, click the Search button  in the toolbar).
  2. Type what you’re looking for the same way you’d say it (this is called natural language search). Here are some examples:
    • from nisha
    • from nisha yesterday
    • to joeshmoe
    • to kevin about remodel
    • flagged emails
    • PDF attachments
  1. As you type, Smart search corrections improve your results by correcting typos and replacing words with useful synonyms.
  2. Press Return.
  3. Mail shows the mailboxes being searched in the toolbar above the message list. If there are no results, select one or more different mailboxes in the Mail sidebar or the Favorites bar.
  4. When you’re done, click the Clear button  in the search field.

But may be easier to click on the Sent folder & sort on Date Sent

Thank you. Yes, this is what I tried initially that didn't work. As I mentioned, this returns both emails that I sent to my friend privately as well as emails that I sent where he and others are in the TO: field (where he’s in the list of recipients), which is literally hundreds of messages. I’d like to only see the emails I’ve send to him privately.

Clicking on the Sent folder and sorting on Date Sent would still give me too large a number of emails to took through.
