iPad side buttons not working
No matter which side button I touch the volume up or volume down, it will not change the volume either up or down Gails iPad (2)

Have you tried a hard reset of your iPad?
If your iPad won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support
(ignore that the instructions are for a frozen iPad).
If that doesn't help, then a long shot, but go to Settings -> Sounds and toggle the "Change with Buttons" on and off. Others have reported that to fix the issue for them.
