how do I send an email with a email image in the body of the email and NOT a icon

I am referring to Apple Mail on a Mac.

This question was asked in an old thread and the sole response was that if you insert a .jpg or .png it should be inserted in-line. I'm not sure that the Q/A pertained to Mail.

In any case, I cannot get an image to be inserted in-line. The first Apple tech support person assured me it was possible and said that he just tried it.

So, I was instructed first to set up in SAFE mode and then in a subsequent Chat I was instructed to re-install macOS. I did both and neither worked.

The third "senior" Apple tech told me that this was unusual behavior. He could not fix it and that he would consult a higher level support person. The higher level support person said that it is not possible to insert an image in-line. Images can only be included as attachments to emails composed in Mail.

I think that is bum advice. Can anyone confirm that images can be inserted in-line in an email on a Mac running macOS Sonoma Version 14.6.1 using Intel silicon?

Sorry I can not. Am restricted to using MacOS Ventura on my 2017 Mac. Seems, with photos, I can drag photos into an email I'm composing and they will display in amongst the text ok while I'm composing the email. However other types of file-attachments (.pdf etc.) display at the end of the message, in accordance with the settings I have in place.

Also: I have no control over how the recipient's eMail app will handle the display of attachments.

Their particular app settings may also influence what the viewer sees.

Looking at a couple of Apple Support's online articles for MacOS Sonoma:

Add attachments to emails in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"Send photos in emails

  1. In the Mail app  on your Mac, open the message you’re writing.
  2. Click the Photo Browser button  in the toolbar.
  3. Drag a photo into your message.

"By default, Mail inserts images at their actual size. If different sizes are available, you can choose one from the pop-up menu located on the right side of the message header."

.... and then ...

"Put email attachments at the end of messages

In the Mail app  on your Mac, do one of the following:

  • For the current message: Choose Edit > Attachments > Insert Attachments at End.
  • For all messages: From the Message viewer, choose Edit > Attachments > Always Insert Attachments at End of Message (a tick shows it’s on)."

So you might want to check whether or not you have ticked "Always Insert Attachment at End of Message", and, if ticked, whether unticking that gives you more control.

Also:

Send large attachments in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Eg: Says:

"You can change how attachments are displayed in the Compose window (this doesn’t determine how attachments are shown for your recipients).

✽. To display an attachment (such as a one-page PDF document or an image) as an icon, Control-click the attachment in your message, then choose View as Icon.

To show the attachment again, Control-click it, then choose View in Place".

So we do have some control over whether an attachment shows as an icon, or in the place we put it.

All the best :-)

Wondering what happens if you Control-click the attachment that displayed at the end, and choose "View in Place" from the little menu that appears.

If things are not working as documented by Apple, you might want to send feedback to Apple. They will likely not reply, but your feedback will reach those who work behind-the-scenes, and can make changes. If others are also experiencing similar issues, we may see an update that addresses them.

Thank you for your very detailed reply, BRBO.

Things are supposed to work the way you describe, but unfortunately for me, they do not. Here is a simulated email with the Photo Browser opened.

Here I am dragging a photo into my simulated email.

Here is what happens when I release the mouse button. The image is inserted as an attachment, not in line with my text.

At the request of Apple Tech Support Chat I have restarted the Mac in SAFE mode and I have re-intalled macOS. (That's not as scary as it sounds. It takes an hour or so but everything comes back as it was.) Unfortunately, neither of these steps fixed the problem.

I gave permission to the last tech support person I worked with to view my screen and he checked all of the things you talk about ("Insert Attachments at End" and "Always Insert Attachments at the End") plus a lot of other things. He finally (he says) consulted a more senior tech support person and then came back to tell me that it is not possible to insert an image in-line in a message with Mail.

I'm becoming quite certain that this is bogus - just so he could close out my case. I believe that the default operation with Mail is to insert the image in line. Incidentally, that's what happens when I use Outlook to compose email.

I wouldn't mind the truth, whatever it is, but I hate being lied to.
