Does anyone know what is wrong with my mac screen? I didn't drop it or hit it on anything so I do not know if I physically damaged the screen somehow or its an internal issue. The model is a mac book pro 2019 16-in. How much would it cost to fix this? Thanks.

That would appear to be a hardware failure, yes. It's not impossible it was caused by closing the screen with some debris that would have put pressure on the screen, though we'd have no way of knowing for certain since we can't look at the system ourselves. Since the cause of the problem is uncertain, it would be best if you can take the system to an Apple Store or authorized service center for diagnosis and an estimate.

Vertical artifacts correlate VERY strongly with Hardware issues inside the display itself.
Screen data are created, stored, and transmitted as Rows of pixels (not columns). The only place they get together in a vertical way is inside the display.
