Why is my AirTag not connecting to my iPhone and says Searching for Signal?

Bought a new Apple AirTag & connected to my iphone 15pro. In spite of strong cell & Internet signal, repeatedly receive message "Searching for signal..." And the Air Tag can't be located until I'm within 13 feet. Even when it does locate the AirTag, the Find Me app sends me in the wrong direction. If I didn't know where the device is, & in a completely quiet location, I'd never find the AirTag. I've replaced the battery & that didn't help. Is this a faulty Tag or a compatibility issue or something else? Many thanks for your help.

I suggest that you reset this AirTag, and then, try pairing it with your iPhone again. After doing so, be sure that it shows up in the Find My app when your phone is within its Bluetooth range (~30-40').

If successful, it should appear in the Find My app, on the Items tab, as:

  • Home - Now
  • With You

If it does not, then it could be possible that it is defective. Should that be the case, and you purchased it within a 14-day window, you can either request a full refund or ask for a replacement.

You can certainly return them, as Zachyy has suggested, but I think to prevent you from being disappointed with the replacements would be to make sure you understand how they work when they are outside of the Bluetooth range of your iPhone.

Just in case you were not aware, the Apple AirTags rely on both Bluetooth and the Apple crowdsourcing "Find My Network." When outside the range of your phone, other iPhones near by and in range, will receive the tag's Bluetooth beacon signal. That signal only provides an encrypted tag ID to that iPhone. In turn, that phone having an active Internet connection, will relay the phone's GPS location along with the tag's ID, to the Apple servers over that Internet connection. This is where the Find My app on your phone would get this "location" data from those Apple servers.

As you can see, a number of things have to "line up" properly to make this work. The bottom line? If you need to track something with accurate location updates, you will want to use a device that uses GPS technology, not Bluetooth.

FWIW, where I find these tags most useful is with my vehicle keys ... and (knock on wood) I've yet to not be able to find any of them if I misplaced them.

Thank you for your quick reply. I’m successfully able to connect it with my iPhone but when I get outside of 10 feet find my app says searching for signal moved to a better location. I have replaced the battery, reset AirTag two times. I did buy these in a pack of four yesterday so return wouldn’t be a problem. Do you recommend trying the other AirTags to see if the one is defective or if it the whole lot?

I understand that the searching iPhone needs to at least be 10m (inside), and 30 m (outside) in order to locate accurately. When I activate Find My, the Apple product that receives the ping from the AirTag needs to have Bluetooth on and within the 10-30m range to send the signal. I took the Airtag outside, laid in open air and walked 200ft away resulting in same Searching for signal message. My wife has an iPhone with Bluetooth on as well and she was 10 ft away from the Airtag during my test. Since I got them yesterday, I set an appointment with the Apple Store Tuesday to troubleshoot in person, and replace, retest when I’m there.

in regard to your experience with precise location with your keys, does AirTag lead you within a foot or so when you’re tracking these down?

thank you

I only have an 3rd gen iPhone SE available to me, so I can't verify "precision finding" as I would need an iPhone 11 or newer model. However, your iPhones support this capability, they should be able to get you within a few feet of the tag. Apple claims "precision finding" is more accurate than either Bluetooth or GPS.
