Can I use two cards with Apple Pay on my iPhone?

I have two debt cards linked to Apple Pay. I use one card for general expenses and the other for monthly bills. I want to do the same with them on Apple Pay, however the problem is my phone will only allow the card I pick as the default card to be used for all payments. Is there a way to set it up so I can use one card for things like my monthly Disney Plus subscription and the other card for my general expenses like Chipotle? I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max IOS 17.5.1 Any help would be appreciated.

Ok that helps…I think but I’m not seeing an option to tell my phone (or Apple Pay) that I want to use one card for Monthly subscriptions.

You can’t, period. Your only option is to select the card you want to use manually. There is no way for your Wallet app to know which card you want to use for specific expenditures.

The Default Card is just the card that will come up first. You can still choose a different card with Apple Pay for online and in store purchases.

For in store purchases, I find it easier to open the Wallet app and choose the card I want to use. When you hold it up to the retail terminal, Apple Pay will use that card.

This isn’t that complicated. I have my American Express Blue Cash Preferred card as the >default< on my Apple ID Account. All my subscriptions, apps etc. run through Apple and are paid by the Am/Ex card.

In my Apple Wallet app, my Apple Card is my default. I also have many other cards in my Apple Wallet. I use Apple Pay on my iPhone to make purchases at restaurants, gas stations, groceries etc. Two separate accounts and two different cards are the default.

Now, if you are not talking about Apple Pay, but your Apple ID Account, you have a possibility of several different defaults, including Apple Gift Cards, Apple Account Funds, Apple Cash and a credit or debit card of your choice. Confusing? Yes it is!. Apple has a support article that explains the order payment methods are used in your Apple ID Account.

I didn’t go through Disney. The subscription is listed on my phone in the Settings under “Subscriptions”!!!

In that case Apple Pay is not involved in any way.

The subscriptions will use the payment methods on your Apple ID in the order they appear in.

You can tap on "Edit" at the top right and then drag the payment methods there up or down to change the order in which they are used.

The top payment method will then be used first for the store payments

and recurring subscriptions first.

This has no bearing on the default payment method set up in the Wallet App and has no relation to Apple Pay.

There seems to be a confusion between Apple Pay, and Apple's media stores payment mechanism.

Apple's iTunes and App Stores do not use Apple Pay in any way shape or form.

If you subscribe to Disney+ through Apple / your Apple account, then Apple Pay is not involved in any way.

You can set the default payment method for your Apple ID to be used for recurring subscriptions separate to that of the default card used for Apple Pay because they are 2 different things.

To modify the payment method used for subscriptions charged by Apple, through your Apple account (again, completely unrelated to Apple Pay) follow the steps in the support document linked below.

click here ➜ Add a payment method to your Apple ID - Apple Support

The payment methods added to your Apple ID are charged in the order they appear in.

You can tap on edit and then drag the payment methods there up or down. The top payment method will then be used first for the store payments and recurring subscriptions.

The Apple ID balance cannot be moved from the first position and will always be the first thing Apple attempts to charge for iTunes and App Store purchases and recurring subscriptions, followed by your other payment methods in the order they appear in.

If you subscribed to Disney+ directly with them (even if you chose Apple Pay), then they charge whichever card was selected at the time you started the subscription.

Not sure there is a way to select a different card, but if there is, it would need to be done through your Disney+ account directly on their website.

A wallet cannot have two defaults. I don’t know how Disney subscriptions worked into this, unless you subscribe directly. I subscribe to Disney through Apple ID. But it sounds like you want to use Apple Pay as a bill paying service and Apple Pay is not a bill pay service. Apple is not a bank and can’t function in the capacity as a bank.

Apple Pay is an extremely secure way of making payments for products and services and protect your personal and financial information. But it cannot function as a bank.

I don’t know where you’re getting the idea I want to use it as a bank. All I know is when I add a card to my Wallet it’s made available to use with Apple Pay. When I opened my Disney Plus Account it gave me the option to use Apple Pay for my monthly subscription. I accepted that option and the one card I had on file with Apple Pay was the one that’s used to pay my monthly subscription. Unfortunately that card is the one I use for general expenses not monthly subscriptions. Realizing my mistake I added the card I use for monthly expenses. No matter what I do the payment, for Disney Plus, always goes to my general expense card.

If I understand what you’re saying from your other replies here, If I select my monthly expense card as my default card, the Disney Plus payment should be taken out of that card. If I use Apple Pay, by pressing the sleep/wake button twice, and holding it to a reader, scroll through the card options making sure my general expense card is selected, the money will come from that account?

Yea I know it’s not that difficult but, even though I’m used to tech, sometimes the easiest things slip right by me. Just ask my ex…actually don’t do that..no one wants that.

I’m not confused about Apple Pay and Apple ID being two separate accounts. I don’t even know where you’re getting that. I don’t need to go to the Disney website to change the payment plan…the last time I tried it said “Apple Pay” and didn’t give me an option to change it. I could try canceling my plan and starting over but I’m trying to avoid that.

Attached are two photos showing I pay for the Disney Plus subscription through my Phone. I know Apple Pay has the ability to make monthly payments because it does that IE Disney Plus…I also get a receipt once a month FROM Apple showing my payments. I’m not going to show those receipts. I also know I can use Apple Pay to buy groceries, DoorDash, restaurants…etc… So…if Apple Pay has those abilities AND has the ability to add extra cards there must be a way to use ONE card for monthly payments ONLY and one card for everything else. Right now I’ve selected the appropriate card for the “default” card hoping the Disney payment will come out of that one instead of the general account. I’ll use Apple Pay at point of sale locations by scrolling through the card options ensuring I have the appropriate card selected.

I know the problem is my lack of understanding on the topic but can anyone please let me know if you can comprehend what I’m saying….please.

That is a screenshot from your Apple ID Account. That is a separate from Apple Pay. Here is the link I posted yesterday at about noon that explains the billing order for payment methods added to Apple ID. It can be changed at any time, but there can only be one default payment method. If you redeem an Apple Gift card and/or add funds to your Apple Account that will be the default until funds are exhausted. I’ll post the link again for you convenience.

I’ll share this additional link which explains what Apple Pay is.

The link below is to your Apple ID Account. There you’ll find some of the many services that Apple offers, including Payment. This account is separate from Apple Pay.

Unfortunately, all I see in the links you provided is different ways I can use Apple Pay, Apple ID, Wallet or whatever to pay for things. I already know this as I use Apple Pay for a variety of things. I feel that I understand the following.

Wallet: used to store debt cards, credit cards, gift cards…etc.

Apple Pay: uses cards, stored in Wallet, to pay for a variety of services including POS purchases and monthly payments.

Apple ID: Has nothing to do with paying anything. Used to identify an Apple user when they sign in to an Apple device. Also used to keep track of items stored in iCloud which may include information for Wallet and Apple Pay so said information can be transferred from one device to another for convenience of said user.

None of the info you’ve provided makes sense to me. My conclusion is that this is Karma punishing me for making fun of my mom for not knowing how to use a VCR when I was a kid. Anyway…thanks for trying! It’s not you it’s me…🤣
