MacBook Pro stopped communicating with printer

My MacBook Pro recently updated to Sonoma 14.6.1 and now I have lost my printer (Samsung CLP-680DW). When I try to reinstall the printer it appears in the list of printers, I click add, a box appears say Setting up 'Samsung CLP-680 Series' but then an error message "Unable to connect to ‘Samsung CLP-680 Series (SEC8425192A97C1)._ipp._tcp.local.’ due to an error. Would you still like to create the printer?".

If I click continue it goes back to the setting up Samsung printer message and then errors saying cannot communicate with the printer.

The printer and laptop are on the same wi-fi network.

I have tried connecting via USB and again the printer appears in the list of printers with USB next to it. When I highlight the USB version and click Add the connecting message appears briefly then disappears but no printer added.

My MacBook Pro is a 13" 2020 version.

How do I rectify this?

An AirPrint-supported printer would be needed for printing without additional drivers. However, a Samsung CLP-680DW is not listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support (en-us August 21, 2024) as a supported model. On the other hand, AirPrint is mentioned in the specifications (under Mobile printing capability) at https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/product-specs/samsung-clp-680-color-laser-printer-series/model/16462334 (this may be an early firmware/AirPrint version, though).

If the printer actually supports AirPrint, it must be connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router) as the Mac. AirPrint works with wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet) network connections, so it may be worth testing to wire the printer to one of the LAN ports of the router instead.

If there is a problem with AirPrint, try a full power-cycle sequence (including the router, the printer and the Mac).

If the printer does not support AirPrint, compatible drivers would be needed. Unfortunately, CPL-680DW drivers from HP (Samsung printers are now part of HP) appear to be available for up to macOS 10.14 Mojave only.

PCL6 and PS3 are mentioned under Print languages in the specifications for the CPL-680DW, so a workaround could possibly be to try generic PCL or postscript drivers under macOS.
