Password on external backup drive

My Time Machine backup drive hasn't backed up since July. I disconnected it from my laptop, hoping to "reboot" it. When I connected it again, it asked me for a password. I don't remember setting up a password for it. How do I reset my password so the drive will work again? Any help appreciated.

A long shot, but have you tried your Mac user login password? If that doesn't work, you may have at some point set a Time Machine encryption password. If you did and you have iCloud Keychain enabled, you may be able to retrieve your backup password through Keychain Access. Otherwise, you can’t restore or recover your data if you lose or forget your Time Machine password.

Regards.
