Adding an eSIM for travel to the US

Looking for confirmation of everything I’ve been reading, please and thank you!

I am travelling to the US, so when I get to the border, I buy an eSIM from lets say T-Mobile. Once I activate that eSIM, I go to settings, turn off my Canadian carrier cell data and roaming. The T-Mobile eSIM is then active and I can make calls and use data from T-Mobile. I don’t lose any of my contacts or other information on my phone.

Will I still get calls and texts from my Canadian number, and if I do, will Telus ding me for the US daily data rate? Or could I set up the Telus “per use” travel plan in which case I can receive texts for free.

Telus charges $14/day for US roaming. I can get an unlimited T-Mobile for $40 US for 30 days.

The Telus plan is $14 per day. We’ll be in the US for 10 to 12 days. I have to get texts on at least a couple of the days when i do payroll for clients.

It looks like my workaround will be to put an eSIM in my iPad, turn off the cell data on my iPhone, then use a hotspot to get data on my phone. All my clients have iPhones so their texts will come through on wifi. And I think there’s a way to do wifi calling on my phone if I really need it.

Might be a better way, but it will work.

Hubby will get an eSIM for his phone in case we need it.
