Bought a Sealed iPhone 15, But It's Managed by a Company—What Do I Do?!

I recently bought an iPhone 15 (regular model) from a reseller. The box was completely sealed, and I even checked the sticker with UV light and the serial number on the Apple website—it showed the phone hadn’t been opened or activated before. Everything seemed legit.

But when I went through the setup, I got stuck at a Remote Management page! After researching the name, I found out the phone belongs to a pharmaceutical company. The only way to unlock it is with a username and password that I obviously don’t have.

I’m seriously frustrated right now. How is this possible if the phone was sealed and new? Should I go back to the reseller or the feds? Has anyone else had this happen? What should I do next?

It's highly likely that the iPhone is stolen goods. You can try going back to the seller, but it's probable that they'll have disappeared or will do nothing for you. If as I suspect the seller can't or won't help and you bought through eBay or another site that offers purchase protection, file an issue with them.

If none of that works and you paid with a credit card, contact your card issuer and report the problem to them. If you paid with cash or check, then you're quite probably stuck. You can file a fraud report with the Feds and/or your state attorney general, but there's very little that they'll be able to do for you.

Good luck.

Get your money back, it was not new. Sealing a box can be done by anyone. The most important thing is to get your money back, because if you delay, you may find yourself outside the return window and be stuck with the phone.

You can pursue it further after that and if it was an Authorized Apple Reseller, then Apple would sure like to have any documentation you can provide to investigate the matter on their own. You also have options to file a complaint with the FTC.
