Identifying which photos to import

I am trying to import photos from a particular date range (2020) from my husband's iphone (iphone 15) into Photos on my mac (MacOS 14.1.2). Yes, they are all there on the Photos app in front of me (the many thousands) waiting for me to choose which ones to select. However I cannot find any tools to select a date range. I cannot even click on a photo to enlarge it to identify the metadata or get an idea of when it was taken. All I have in front of me is a giant grid of photos with no indication of year or date and no capacity to search by date. If I select a photo and click on the view tool the metadata options become greyed out.

Solutions please.

There is no tool to help us select the photos we want. The only help we get is the duplicate detection - Photos will show us the new photos not yet in our library separately from the photos we have already imported.

You may want to import all photos at once - but import them to a different Photos Library, see:

Create additional libraries

Once the photos are in a Photos Library, you can use Photos for Mac to isolate the photos you want to import. You can delete all photos you do not want by selecting the date range of the photos you do not want in the "All Photos" view. Or use smart albums. Delete the unwanted photos, empty Recently Deleted, then import the Library with the new photos to your own library. See this page in the user guide for importing from another library: From another Photos library
