I have a new MacBook Air I have had an older MacBook Pro & in the drop down from the apple in the top menu bar the Preferences were located. very simple to navigate. I can not access any of the things I would like to.

"System Preferences" were changed to "System Settings" (when macOS Ventura was released if I remember correctly). In addition to changing the name, things were significantly rearranged and changed and made quite a bit more like Settings on iPhones and iPads. I found it difficult to find things as they weren't where they were previously located. However using Search (top item, above your user icon) has worked very well and I've been able to adapt to the new layout.
