location not available apple maps.

Changed to a new internet provider (BellAliant) with new Bell provided giga hub and one Bell pod wi-fi extender. Now when using apple maps it no longer can find my location. Nothing has changed in the configuration of my ipad. This was not an issue with previous isp. BellAliant the support says it is not their equipment that is the problem.

iPad, iPadOS 17

Tried calling BellAliant, according to their remote diagnostics their equipment is operating correctly with no fault conditions. They were quick to blame Apple, Google, my ipad setup, anything but themselves. They would not entertain any other possibilities.

Not all ISPs practice net-neutrality...

Some ISPs selectively drop/block certain network protocols - and this can affect certain services used by your iPad or other computers. Some US-based ISPs also love to block access to other Operator's Mail services.

Simple tests to perform... and compare behaviour:

  1. Try using other Apple devices, such as iPhone or other iPads.
  2. Try using affected devices with other ISPs or WiFi networks - such a cellular Hotspot connection.

Where ISPs deliberately drop traffic, they rarely admit to this practice. Insofar as "their" equipment is concerned, it will be operating as "they" intend.

As described, you presumably have a WiFi Only model of iPad.

Only WiFi+Cellular models of iPad have GNSS/GPS capabilities with which to reliably determine their location independently of their internet connection - GNSS capabilities being a function of the iPad Cellular chipset.

WiFi Only models of iPad have no GPS capabilities with which iPad Location Services can derive location. This fundamental difference may significantly impact your ability to use mapping or other Apps that require precise location data - in particular if real-time positioning (e.g., a moving map) is required.

WiFi Only iPad models can only “infer” their location from a database lookup of neighbouring WiFi networks for which the geographic location is known, or the geographic location of your public IP address. For static applications in urban locations, where the location of IP public IP addresses and WiFi networks are known, an “inferred” location can be relatively accurate. However, in rural locations, or when using a Cellular/Satellite/VPN connection, location accuracy of an inferred location [if it works at all] may be very inaccurate.

Choosing a cellular model does not commit you to adding a cellular service plan for the iPad, but ensures that you have immediate access to GPS/GNSS and precision positioning services.

There's not much more we can say. Again, if location works correctly when you're connected to other Wi-Fi networks, then the problem is with your primary Wi-Fi service. I suppose it could be your Wi-Fi router - check for any available firmware updates, try rebooting it, etc. - but I'd bet a cookie it's BellAliant's problem, regardless of what they claim.

Regards.

I understand the difference that wi-fi location is inferred, but it has always been reasonable accurate for my home location. It has always pinpointed my home location within a 100 meters which is fine for plotting routes prior to leaving home or finding businesses near me. Currently apple maps comes up in whatever location was last viewed, and a brief message saying “Location service not available”. I have also tried Google maps and it comes up with the same massage “location services not available” and defaulting to a location in the Atlantic Ocean.

Before I disconnected my previous ISPs supplied router, I tried connecting to its WiFi signal. Both the apple maps and google maps locate my position, no error messages.
