iphone 14 apple maps malfunctioning

My iphone 14 apple maps can’t seem to keep up on my location problems unless I restart the route, and that is only a short term solution. It will either think I went somewhere I am not or it will stop tracking me all together. This has happened a few times now with my maps with apple car play, in two different vehicles. I have already restarted my phone and toggled my location and cell services on/off. I’m not sure what else to do or what could be wrong.

iPhone 14 Pro, iOS 16

Usually I do not leave my wifi on when I’m not at home but the rest are all turned on.

Wi-Fi is absolutely essential for Find My and ANY mapping program (Apple, Google, Waze, Garmin…) to be accurate. GPS only works outdoors with a clear view of the sky in all directions, something that is rarely true in a car, never true indoors, and may not be outside the car with heavy foliage or rain clouds.

All navigation apps supplement the GPS data with the location of known Wi-Fi networks (called “aGPS” or “Assisted GPS”). It doesn’t connect to the network, it just “sees” it in a scan and uses all of the Wi-Fi networks to triangulate its position. So if Wi-Fi is off mapping apps simply will not work reliably. The Apple location database knows just about every Wi-Fi network location around the world, and keeps it updated.

Cellular signal bars have ZERO to do with GPS tracking, which only uses cellular data to retrieve the map, not to find the location. If you have Wi-Fi on and still have issues your phone has a hardware problem, or you are in a rural area with no Wi-Fi networks within 100 yards. In this case put your phone as close to the windshield as you can; get a windshield suction cup or a vent mount. And if you have windows that are tinted with a metallic coating that can also block signals, but, as you have a strong cellular signal that is not likely to be the issue.
