I bought my iPhone 11 in April it’s only September but my battery capacity has dropped to 88% this can’t be normal was I given a phone with a defective battery?

You may have bought it very recently, but it is at least two years old. Batteries degrade over time even when the device is not being used. Especially if the iPhone was allowed to completely discharge while still in its packaging.
This phone was discontinued 2 years ago and it would not be unusual to have the battery health showing 88%. If the phone was purchased used, then the battery would most likely already have been replaced by now and that could have also been with a third party battery that would explain the poor performance.
