Why is my iPad 10th Gen not charging with USB C adapters?

I have an iPhone 13 (lightning) and an iPad 10th gen (usb c). When I attach a usb c adapter from a lightning cable to the iPad, the charge icon lights up but then says "not charging". I have tried a number of adapters but it's the same. Is there a way to fix this or doesn't the Ipad 10th gen charge with adapters?

What type of "adapter" are you using? You will not be able to charge your iPad10 using a Lightning cable.

Your iPad10 has a USB-C port. Your iPad should be connected to an appropriate power source, to charge, using the correct USB-C cable. Introducing plug adapters is not a recommended practice, as these may prevent charging - or at worst cause damage.

For information, most models of iPad require connection to a Power Adapter rated at 12W (i.e., 2.4A @5V) or greater to reliably charge. 5W Power Adapters (1.0A @5V) intended for older models of iPhone are inadequate to charge an iPad; if the iPad charges at all, charging will be very slow. Many recent models of iPad are supplied with a 20W USB-C Power Adapter.

Some third-party USB-C power adapters (and portable PowerBanks) may not support USB PD (Power Delivery). Power Delivery mutually negotiates the charging voltage; the source, load and cable are all elements involved in the negotiation protocol. Unless the Power Adapter explicitly supports USB PD, it will almost certainly fail to charge the iPad; proprietary charging standards, such as QC (Quick Charge), are not supported.

Many computer USB ports also cannot source sufficient power to charge an iPad. Unless explicitly designed for charging connected devices, computer USB ports are typically limited to 0.5-1A @5V (i.e., 2.5-5.0W).

An iPhone 15/16 will be supplied with a USB-C to USB-C cable - but not a Power Adapter, this being an additional purchase if required.

Your best option for charging your iPad and iPhone is to use a USB-C Power Adapter that supports USB PD (Power Delivery). As you might anticipate, all Apple USB-C Power Adapters support this charging standard.

I guess that answers my question. The different adapters were all bought on Amazon and when I asked, they all said they WOULD charge and iPad 10. I was just trying to cut down on the different charge cables by using adapters as with others I have bought.

I imagine that when I upgrade to iPhone 15, the same cable will charge both?

Thanks for the detailed response.
