When charging iphone switches off and restarts and is very hot after a few minutes. Only started after battery replaced not authentic iPhone battery but still valid from Timpsons. On second battery today but now with same issue. Any advice thinking more than a battery issue!!

It's a shame, because the shop has basically trashed your phone and now Apple won't touch it.
Painful lesson, but you will know to take the next phone to an authorized Apple repair shop.
There is no way to determine what the issue is until you put an Apple genuine part in the iPhone. Otherwise you’re chasing your tail. I could replace a dozen parts and not fix the issues, why? The issue is the battery. That’s the starting point and diagnostic works forward from there.

They don't make their own screens either, or the main circuit board. The assembly plant basically assembles parts that are made by various suppliers to Apple's specifications.
You got a battery that did not meet the specifications.
Take it back to wherever you had the cheap battery knock off installed and have them fix it.
Since you had a cheap knock off battery installed by non certified technicians, Apple won’t touch your device.

You’re welcome. If you go to an Authorized Apple Repair Center/service agent and explain the situation they’ll probably work with you to resolve the issue. An Apple Store will be less likely to be able to assist. Company policy will generally preclude the ability to perform repairs. However, if you talk to one of the store managers, they may be more co-operative and able to arrange a repair. The worst thing that will happen is the manger says no, but at least you’ve made a new friend. The best thing that happens is the manager authorizes the repair.
Explore your options and please let the community know how it works out for you and your daughter.
PS: I’m a former Apple Store manager and I’d have probably gone ahead and replaced the battery, unless the iPhone showed other signs of issues.
The shop installed the wrong part. That is their problem. They need to fix the problem.
The question would be whether you allow them to make it your problem.

Perhaps he’s damaged it replacing the battery but how am I to know? Worse what come back do I have… nothing I assume. So basically I’m liable as he’s not going to take responsibility!
Thanks , it’s really frustrating as all was working fine just battery health was a bit low at 75% . Daughter going to uni and wanted to replace it so it would last longer. Now wish we had just left it. I don’t think we can get the old battery back and as poster above says Apple unlikely to touch it !! So do you think it’s likely to be because it’s not a genuine Apple replacement battery. But I heard Apple don’t make their own batteries anyway and Monopolies Commission forbid them from having a monopoly on this kind of thing and stopping phones working but…. looks like they have their own ways and means!
No it doesn’t display battery health any longer- he told us that was likely the case as Apple had a monopoly on using their branded batteries. I wasn’t particularly worried as it’s the same with printers and using their cartridges. How can a fairly straightforward battery replacement trash the phone though. I’ve seen it done its not that difficult except for the tiny screws…
