I’d suggest skimming the iPhone user guide occasionally:

Even if I’ve used an Apple device for years, Apple sometimes makes changes to existing behaviours, and can features and enhancements that I can find useful. The guides are a good spot to learn.
An iPhone with Face ID doesn’t have a home button, but (as correctly mentioned in the reply above) there are gestures (and with clues) that provide its function. In the above screen shot, the bar shown at the bottom, and the bar shown at the top right are intended to indicate there are common and useful gestures available in those places. Pull up at the bottom, and pull down in the top right to access the features available in those places.
