messages on macbook sending from iCloud or gmail , not cell number

Trying to send messages from Messages app on MacBook Air. For several years I have been able to send from computer and it shows as sent from my cell number. All of a sudden, with no changes on my part, they started showing from iCloud instead. I have gone into settings and clicked on "start new conversations" from my cell number, I've signed in and out of apple ID, and I've deleted entire text chains on my macbook messages app. Still, it comes through for recipients as either my iCloud or Gmail. Help!

Try this:

Log out of iMessage on all of your devices. Restart them. Log into iMessages on your iPhone. Once it has completely logged in, log back in on your Mac. Then, go back to the iPhone to Settings>Messages>Text Message Forwarding and select your MacBook.

You can specify what you send your messages out on when you first start a message. If you have numerous emails you can type them in. Look in Settings>IMessage>bottom left hand corner>Start New Conversation From

If your cellphone (iphone) has been off for any period of time then it will revert to a email address.

Thank you for responding. I have specified my cell number every time I go to start a new conversation , but still it is sent from one of my email addresses. Very frustrating.

I almost never turn off my cell phone (or MacBook), so I don't think that is the issue.
