UPI not supported below iOS 17

UPI applications such as Phone pay, Gpay, Paytm, Bhim are not supported on iPhone devices with lower version to iOS17. I have iPhone 5 SE and iPhone 6s and both don't have upgrades. Can't use these phones without UPI. I am worried to buy new iPhone if the basic upgrades are not provided.

Some of the sites I'm reading suggest that SMS forwarding frauds were an issue with UPI payments in India. NCPI wanted Apple to put in an extra security mechanism to help them block these types of frauds and scams.

The mechanism first became available in iOS 17, whereupon NCPI required UPI payment apps to be running on iOS 17 (or later). Apple did not change anything in older versions of iOS to break UPI payments. They did (apparently) put some anti-fraud support feature into iOS 17, so in that sense, Apple changed something. But it was NCPI who made the decision to lock out iPhones that did not have this new feature. NCPI who made that change.

As evidence, note that the mobile apps from some of the largest banks in the U.S. – including ones that have their own online money transfer services – will run on iOS 15.

Or, as you say,

Let's clarify things a bit here.

UPI has made the decision to no longer support the iOS version that your iPhones are using. This was not Apple's decision.....it was UPI's decision.

Frankly, UPI has abandoned you and your current phones. They are forcing you to buy a new phone if you want to use their app.

UPI could have allowed you to use your current phones if they wanted to, but they decided otherwise.

Apple is not involved here. Your complaint is with UPI.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that you can thank NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India – the developer of the UPI system) for this.

The iPhone 5s originally shipped with iOS 7, and got five major version updates, but cannot update past iOS 12.

The iPhone 6s originally shipped with iOS 9, and got six major version updates, but cannot update past iOS 15.

Apple has a strong track record of providing iOS updates for older phones. Much better than any Android devices out there.

The iPhone 6s was discontinued in 2018. It was originally released in 2015. It originally shipped with iOS 9 and was upgradable all the way through iOS 15. That's 6 major version upgrades.

The first generation iPhone SE was essentially an iPhone 6s in a smaller package.

The iPhone 5S was originally released in 2013 and discontinued in 2016. It originally shipped with iOS 7 and was upgradable through iOS 12. That's 5 major version upgrades.

There is no such thing as an iPhone 5 SE.

Still not convinced? Ask yourself what changed. Apple did not change anything. UPI changed everything.
