Understanding heart symbol on Apple Watch workout screen

How does one interpret the heart icon in the Apple Watch Workout app? Sometimes it is solid red, sometimes just an outline, and sometimes the outline moves. What do these indicate?

If the outline moves, or the heart icon is just outlined, the watch can not detect a heart rate on your wrist.

A solid red heart icon shows, that a heart rate is detected and recorded during your workout.


If a heart rate can not be detected, make sure that the watch is not sitting right next to your wrist, move to up about 1-2cm. And the watch has to have the right fit, have a look at the related article:
