Can I use an older Apple TV remote to manage a powerpoint presentation on my MacBook Air (Monterey)?

I have an older Apple TV remote (silver with the black ring and 2 lower buttons) I noticed that sometimes my Mac mini would react with the remote until I disabled the control (on the mini.) So....I was curious if I could use the remote to control my 2015 MacBook Air running Monterey when presenting a Powerpoint presentation. I would like to use the remote to advance the slide of the presentation deck. Is that possible?

It can only work on Macs that have an IR receptor. I think those haven’t been part of MacBook Air for many years.

Not sure if a USB external receptor can add this functionality. It may need additional third party software to link the signals to commands.

The last models to include a built-in IR receptor were:

  • iMac: Mid 2011
  • Mac mini: Late 2014
  • MacBook: Mid 2009
  • MacBook Air: Mid 2009
  • MacBook Pro (without Retina display): Mid 2012
