Linking AirTags to a new apple ID

My old apple ID was compromised and I had to set up a new apple ID. Unfortunatey, my AirTags were linked to my old apple ID and I was not able to unlink them before my ID was compromised. Now I am unable to reset the AirTags and link them to my new apple ID.

I tried the reset suggestion of replacing the battery and pressing down five times to hear the sound but the sound never changed and when I tried to pair with my phone (and new apple ID), I got a message that the AirTag is connected to another apple ID - my old compromised ID !

Does anyone have any suggestions or do I simply have to buy new AirTags?

Short answer? You will need to purchase new tags.

A bit longer answer. Apple does provide you a means to disassociate your AirTag from your Apple ID, but only if that ID is still active. That is because, when associated, Find My Lock is enabled.

AFAIK, Apple does not provide us with a method to resolve the issue when that old Apple ID is compromised. However, you can certainly contact Apple Support directly to find out if that has changed. To do so, simply select the "Support" link on the lower left-hand side of this forum's web page.
