Turn off "Hide IP Address" located in "Settings - Apps - Mail - Privacy Protection" .
That solved my problem, thank you.
There is a good explanation in the settings explaining what is done and why.
The short version: External content is loaded in a private mode, not when you open the mail but in the background, that's why you se the big delay.
As with several other people, I found that deleting my Gmail account (on both the iPhone and iPad) and re-adding them seems to have solved my slow download problems, but Apple, why should this have been necessary?
Removed the gmail account and added it back. Solved the issue.
Ok. So what has solved it for me is turning off Sky Broadband shield. Not happy about doing so, but it has now allowed emails to arrive quickly into Apple mail. Why other apps like Edison or Outlook work without issue with Sky broadband shield I don’t know.
Thanks. Disabling “protect Mail actovity/ hide IP addresss” seems to have worked for me, but I gotta say that disabling security features to make services useable/ functional seems to be a hallmark of Apple these days.
I found something else that fixed the problem. I went into Mail Settings fetch, and I found some things being fetched on calendars that were no longer active. They were fetching something that wasn’t there to be fetched. I set them to manual. And Wala everything works now.
Not sure why this was an issue and earlier versions of iOS, but there were occasional delays so maybe they did something that made it worse
I removed and re-added my ionos.de account, and now it seems to work properly again (iOS 18.2)
I don’t use my phone in a corporate setting, but did find that switching of Sky broadbands shield fixed my Apple mail issue. It’s not ideal as the droid users at home never had a problem with the shield up.
MacOS 15.3\IOS 18.3 update seems to have improved\fixed for me. Early days but looking much better.....
iphone 13, ios 18.1.1, gmail in apple mail app taking forever to connect/load. Not getting business emails and no notifications. Constantly refreshing but doesn't help. Come on apple. We are being charged more for tech and getting less for every update. Tried the IMAP Path Prefix, deleting the mail app, reseting iphone. Nothing works. Having to use the Gmail app now.
I have switched to Edison mail. I preferred Apple mail, but as it no longer works I have no choice. I tried Outlook but couldn’t get my phone contacts added. Apple need to start listening to their customers.
Same issue. Tried microsoft outlook app and it’s way faster. I hate to say this since I prefer working with Apple email. Unfortunately Apple is not listening!
I'm typing this as I just waited 10 minutes for a very short email to download in Apple Mail with my icloud.com account on my new iPhone 16 Pro with iOS 18.2 with good wifi. I have been intermittently, but more often then not, having this problem ever since I bought the phone. Also having this problem on my iPhone 14 Pro ever since upgrading to iOS 18.0. This is incredibly frustrating. I will have to think twice about updating in the future. I am using a gmail, icloud, and custom imap account in mail and they are all experiencing the same issue.
Dear Apple, Please fix ASAP!!
I have the same problem in iPadOS 18.2 (iPad Pro with M2) and iOS 18.2 iPhone 14 PRO (started with version 18). Before I had the option hide Ip activated and attachments would download at normal speed.
i have several emails from different providers and it is the same for all of them.
i used to do a lot of work with email from my iPad and now it is useless.
please solve this urgently or help us with a solution.

i have deactivated this option and it does not solve the problem. When I click on the attachment to download, we do not see the progress of the download anymore.

Yep - same problem! Mine hit after the leap to 18.2 on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. None of the suggestions in here worked. It takes 20-60 mins to get a new message in the app - icloud, MS exchange, and gmail! I ultimately had to download the ridiculous gmail and microsoft mail apps to avoid missing critical business emails! This apple is starting to become rotten to the core!
