It’s the photos app. I’ve had things like background app refresh, dictation and location turned off for years. I have about five (non Apple) apps installed (no social media or entertainment type) and I use my iPhone 15 Pro primarily for talk and text which never accounts for more than 5% of my battery use, even on a heavy use day. I went from holding a two day charge to charging twice a day immediately after iOS 18. I noticed in Battery Heath that Photos was using 32% of my battery in the background which was alarming because I don’t use Photos in that capacity, and for the fact that I have background refresh disabled. My solution was to turn cellular data off for Photos entirely. (Settings > Apps> Photos > Cellular Data> toggle off) It’s been about a week and my battery is holding almost the same charge it did pre-update. I hope this helps!

Apple has essentially overhauled the utility app into their own version of social media, riddled with unnecessary AI and it’s working as such. Imagine it as uploading 5,000+ photos and videos to Instagram all at the same time. As long as you connect to WiFi periodically, your photo’s will continue to sync to iCloud. I don’t use the app much, but I can’t find any reason to have Photos running on cellular.

Side note: I do not connect my iPhone to WiFi on a regular basis. If you are constantly connected to WiFi, this fix likely won’t work for you as the app will continue to run in the background via WiFi and there is currently no way to disable this function (hence the issue).

It has been crazy. Nothing seems to help.

I switched from a 14 ProMax to a 15 ProMax and my phone does not last. It has been a week now since I switched, and I blamed it in part of being in a low coverage area and the internet being out. Back home. Still the same thing. Home and lock screen was just bonkers, so I removed everything from the home and Lock Screen. Disallowed a whole bunch of backgrounding apps ( even though not related to the drainage ), a few weather apps, ... the usual.

But, like this morning, phone is charged. I used it for 20 minutes: a 10 min phone call and 10 min on the ring app changing some settings, and the phone lost 10% battery ... for 20 minutes. That used to be maybe 2% ?

It is like the smallest thing runs the phone on full blast?

Instead of on a single efficiency core?

I have to charge my phone multiple times a day after upgrading to iOS 18. My usage pattern remains unchanged. I contacted apple support and after some checks they blamed the app that had used the battery the most for this problem and asked me to contact the app developer for support(MS Teams in this case). I am don’t think this has to do with MS Teams but trying to reach them.

Rapid Battery Drain Issues After iOS 18 Update on iPhone 15

After updating my iPhone 15 to iOS 18, I’ve experienced a significant drop in battery performance. The battery drains far more quickly than before, even when the phone is idle or in low-power mode. Background apps seem to consume more power, and basic tasks, like checking emails or using social media, cause noticeable battery percentage drops.

In addition, I’ve noticed that the phone heats up during normal use, which I assume is linked to the rapid battery consumption. I’ve tried adjusting settings, turning off background refresh, and even resetting some features, but the issue persists. Apple really needs to address these battery management problems with a prompt fix or patch for iOS 18. For now, I’m regretting this update as it makes my new iPhone feel less reliable.

I don't think you followed up on this thread very well.

We are not talking about an issue that happens for 12-36 hours.

We are talking here about an issue that is on-going after a month of using iOS 18 on all of it's sub-versions up to and including version 18.1.

So yes, this is a problem with iOS 18.x and yes this is something that Apple should investigate into.

iPhone 14 Pro, and I've been having issues since iOS 17.6.2 (currently on 18.1.1).

I've already gone through a factory reset (which helped for about 3 days), countless recommendations for hard resets, then iOS 18.0.1 helped for about 5 days, but since then it's been the same.

I'm not planning on getting it checked for two reasons: 1. the phone is already out of warranty, and 2. the fact that a factory reset and one iOS version helped for a while (3-5 days) suggests more of a software issue. I was planning on upgrading, but I don't want to buy a new phone that will lose a significant amount of battery health within just a few months.

15 pro max iOS 18.1.1 - same issues. Like many others I am traveling this week. Super glad I invested in a portable charger. I did just do almost all of the recommended steps to stop the drain and my battery has finally cooled off. My top drain percentage was from the Lock and Home Screens. This was happening even after all widgets were removed, before I turned off location services, switched to low power mode etc. Hope they can get this fixed quickly, or there are going to be a lot of unhappy iPhone users for Thanksgiving.

In my experience, there’s not an issue with iOS 18. Many third party apps like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, TiKTok and many others were not optimized for the new iOS. Sloppy developers were the cause of the majority of charging and battery issues, again, in my experience. Did they kill a 5+ year old battery? Lithium batteries rarely last 6 or 7 years. Simple chemistry explains that.

iPhone 16 pro max 512gb here. Upgraded to 18.3 a few days ago and noticed much faster than normal battery drain. Last night I went to bed at 00:00 with 58% battery, but decided not to put my phone on charge. Woke up at 05:15am and my battery was dead. Charged it up and it’s now 20:40pm and I’m on 13% battery. There is clearly something going wrong here.

looking at battery stats, my camera was on for 4minutes but somehow accounts for 39% of my battery drain. Wonder if it has something to do with image search?
