MacOS15 / Sequoia - problems with Microsoft files

Hi,

I updated to Sequoia and everything seemed fine.

Now, neither my MacBook Pro (M3) nor my Apple Mini (M2) recognises Microsoft files any longer (Word. PowerPoint, Excel....).

Finder tries to open MS Word files with Preview. When I tell Finder to open the file with MS Word I get the following error message: "Apple could not verify "xxxxxxxxx.docx" is free of malware that may harm your Mac or compromise your privacy". Other file types work perfectly well as before.

Everything works well on my iOS 18 devices.

Anyone else having this problem. Any ideas?

The workaround that worked for me, go to the file with *.docx extension and "right click" to select "Get Info".

From the "Get Info" screen, go to where it says "Open With:", make sure you select "Microsoft Word" and then select "Change All...". This will associate all "*.docx" files back to "Microsoft Word", and no more issues when clicking from the Finder window.

Similarly, do the same for *.xlsx extensions and Microsoft Excel.

Hope this helps everyone. Apple and MS still need to provide an update that fixes this by default on the next update.

It worked. I tried a similar solution with Launch Services but it had issues with System Settings and it would reset on reboot anyway. Your solution seems to work perfectly, even after rebooting. THANK YOU SO MUCH @Francesco_Marcantoni!

I highlight an MS file, then control click (no right click option) and there is no "get info" to click on. I'm using a MacBook Air, Sequoia 15.0.1

BTW, my problem is just the fonts looking pixilated. The files open fine so far.

then my guess is - you have iphone connected with the same iCloud as MacOS. If so - try:

Removing whereby app on iPhone if you have it
Removing apps from syncing with iCloud such as: Viber, Skype.

I am not getting that with any of three of Microsoft apps, but what I am not getting is the icons for them or Apples apps in their office suite. They extensions work ok.

Same here. The problem seem to be fixed.

I'm still getting wrong icons for documents, but at least I can open them properly, so that's not so big of an issue. I'll wait for the fix.

Same here, print as pdf doesn't work either, nothing show up when I try to print.

I had the issue on Monterey in the past. A simple reboot should fix the issue.

In my case, I updated to macOS 15.0 and the 3 Microsoft Office apps disappeared from the Applications folder.

I had the same issue with word, not being able to save. Then I added the icon "save as" in group of icons at the top of the word window, and then I was able to save and to save as.
